Newly Mowed Lawn

"Grass and weed cut down to an inch..."

Newly Mowed Lawn

Grass and weed cut down to an inch,
unable to conceal what lives in the soil.
Ants and sow bugs dither
like compass points in a storm,
unable to find their trails.
It only lasts a day, as a cut
for regulation ought.
Soon an awkward blade rises,
then another, then a throng,
resembling kids in high school
as they flip their hair
to clear their faces, or not,
as they are prone to do.
