A Pair of Shoes, 1886

When Van Gogh took off the shoes
he’d purchased and tramped through mud,
he painted their image on canvas,
humble, soiled, marbled with life.
Between brush strokes
he bit his paint brushes.
When he spoke,
he tasted leather.
