The Stars

"...there’s a chain of command we've broken into..."

The Stars

I show you the stars
from our window
splattered northeast
the fox looms
behind the pool house
there's a critter
to feed every night villain
there’s a chain of command
we've broken into
and rearranged
but who’s watching
as we mutilate
and suck
the marrow
from every living source
and some reasons
we have yet to discover -- the why
the why irrelevant
it’s the what
the meat
the fur
the skin

I threw things out
from my freezer
just to refill it
all in one run

I’ve watched the fox
for three years
just to make sure
the fox survived
it’s beautiful bushy
tail the color of pale cinnamon

We just stare
in awe at the stars
more keep appearing
they shoot out
show off their majestic light
that spreads across
our darkness
