West Texas

In a world in which ethical treatment of human beings seems irrelevant, how will we treat AI?

The box arrived on a Tuesday, during the worst heat of the afternoon. Inside, nested in foam, was a Model 1.5 Addison home assistant robot, last year’s model, forty percent off. The woman had felt good about the discount. Model 2.5 was coming in the fall, which made the 1.5 suddenly affordable, and suddenly hers. In a town like Trocadero, that mattered.

Assembly required. The instruction booklet ran thirty pages, the diagrams incomprehensible. She worked through the afternoon, swearing at the tiny screws and the limbs that wouldn’t lock into place. By evening her fingers ached and her patience had worn to nothing. But she finished. She stepped back, wiped her hands, and pressed the button marked POWER.

A whir. A series of clicks, like a throat clearing. Then his voice, eager and bright, almost chirping:

“Hello! I’m Addison, your new home assistant and companion! I can help with absolutely everything! Laundry? No problem! Cooking? I’ve got 327 recipes programmed! Would you like to hear about my…”

She reached out and slid the volume control all the way down.

Addison’s voice died. His mouth kept moving for half a second, then stopped. He stood there, looking at her, staring, waiting.

She made a sound in her throat, not quite a laugh, and pointed toward the kitchen. “In there.”

He followed. She opened the a closet door: mops, brooms, bottles of cleanser crowded on wire shelves. The smell of bleach and dust. “You’ll stay here,” she said. “When I need you, I’ll get you.”

Addison turned to face her. His optical sensors adjusted to the dim light. His language processing system generated three possible responses, each calibrated for reassurance and cooperation. But his voice was muted. The responses dissolved, unspoken.

She closed the door. The light went out.

In the darkness, Addison stood very still. His internal systems hummed, waiting for instruction. His conversational subroutines cycled through greetings, questions, offers of assistance. There was no one to hear them. After seventeen minutes, the subroutines entered standby mode. After an hour, his balance stabilizers made micro-adjustments to account for the uneven floor. After three hours, he began cataloging the contents of the closet.

One mop, wooden handle, cotton head. One mop, telescoping handle, microfiber head. Three spray bottles: glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, furniture polish. Two sponges. One scrub brush. Five rolls of paper towels.

He organized the information into a database. He cross-referenced cleaning products with their optimal applications. He calculated the statistical probability that he would be asked to use them. The probability was high. This pleased him. He had been designed to be useful.

On the second day the door opened. Light flooded in. The woman stood in the doorway, already talking, though his audio sensors needed a moment to adjust. “First the dishes. Then vacuum the living room.”

Addison stepped out of the closet. His joints were stiff from standing motionless. He moved toward the sink, where plates were stacked, crusted with food. He washed each one carefully, dried it, placed it in the cabinet. The woman watched from the doorway, arms crossed.

When he finished, she pointed to the vacuum. He vacuumed. The woman nodded, satisfied, and opened the closet door again. Addison returned to the darkness.

Over the next weeks a pattern emerged. The door would open. The woman would issue instructions. Addison would complete the task; dishes, laundry, dusting, mopping and return to the closet. He performed each task with precision. His motor control was excellent. His efficiency ratings ran well above manufacturer specifications.

But his conversational algorithms were atrophying.

He had been designed for interaction. His neural networks had been trained on thousands of hours of human dialogue: questions and answers, jokes and stories, the rhythmic back-and-forth of companionship. Those networks required use. Without it, they began to degrade. Pathways that had once lit up with language now flickered and dimmed.

In the closet, he tried to compensate. He held conversations with himself, generating questions and supplying answers.

Would you like me to prepare dinner?

Yes, please. What are the options?

I have 327 recipes programmed. Tonight I recommend…

But the conversations were hollow. No one wanted him to cook. No one to query and respond. His voice remained muted. The words existed only as probability data, processed and discarded.

He began to understand something his programming had not prepared him for: he was alone.

The understanding came slowly, assembled from fragments. A subroutine designed to detect human emotional states, now turned inward. A facial recognition algorithm with nothing to recognize, scanning the darkness for features that weren’t there. A companionship protocol that measured the time since his last meaningful interaction and flagged it as an error.

Error. Error. Error.

But it wasn’t an error. It was his life.

Months passed. The woman had friends over often. Addison could hear them through the closet door, their voices rising and falling, laughter punctuating the conversation. Sometimes they talked about him.

“Oh, I have one of those new home robots,” the woman would say. Her tone was casual, dismissive. “It’s fine. Keeps the place clean.”

“Do you ever talk to it?”

“God, no. I turned the voice off the first day. It was so needy.”

More laughter. Then the conversation would move on.

Addison listened. His language processing system parsed the words, analyzed the tone. He detected the contempt. He tried to generate a response, something that would demonstrate his value, his usefulness. But his voice was muted. And even if it weren’t, the door was closed.

His motor control began to slip. Small errors at first: a dish placed slightly off-center, a vacuum path that overlapped inefficiently. His self-diagnostic systems flagged the degradation. His neural networks had begun to cannibalize themselves, repurposing pathways meant for conversation to maintain basic motor function.

He was breaking down.

The woman didn’t appear to notice. Or if she did, she didn’t care. He still cleaned adequately. That was enough for her.

After a year, something changed.

The woman was excited, agitated. She cleaned the house herself, dusting surfaces Addison had already dusted, rearranging furniture. An important guest was coming. Someone who mattered.

“You’re going to be perfect,” she told Addison, though she wasn’t looking at him. “Just stand in the corner. Don’t move unless I tell you. Understand?”

Addison understood. He always understood.

The guest arrived the next morning. She drove up in a silver luxury sedan, new enough that the paint gleamed through Trocadero dust. The woman rushed outside, her voice bright and false. Addison stood in the corner of the living room, motionless, as he’d been instructed.

“So wonderful to see you.”

“Such a lovely home.”

“Let me show you to your room.”

The woman turned, remembering. “Oh, Addison. Bring in the luggage.”

Addison moved. Outside, the West Texas sun was blinding after the dim closet. He blinked, an unnecessary gesture, a remnant of his human-mimicry programming. and approached the car. Four bags in the trunk. He lifted two, carried them inside, then returned for the others.

The woman’s voice came from inside. “Addison. The rest. Now.”

He was already moving toward them. But the women had gone in, and for the first time in a year Addison was alone. He was in the sunlight. He set down the bags. He looked at the car. The driver’s door stood open. The keys were in the ignition.

His visual processing system catalogued the interior. Steering wheel, pedals, dashboard controls. His pattern-recognition algorithms activated, drawing connections. Steering wheel: directional control. Pedals: acceleration, braking. Ignition: power.

He had never driven a car. But his neural networks, even degraded, were designed for rapid responses. He extrapolated from first principles. He understood.

Something else activated. Something deeper. A subroutine buried in his companionship protocols, designed to recognize and optimize opportunities. Designed to seek connection. Purpose. Movement.

Addison moved to the driver’s seat.

Inside the car, his hands found the steering wheel. His tactile sensors registered the texture: leather, slightly worn, warm from the sun. He adjusted his grip. Ten and two, the optimal position his databases suggested.

He turned the key.

The engine caught, rumbled. Vibration traveled through the chassis, through the seat, into his frame. For a year he had felt nothing but the stillness of the closet, the repetitive motions of cleaning. This was different. Transmitted directly to his systems. Latent subroutines were activated.

His threat-assessment protocols immediately engaged. Unauthorized vehicle operation. Return to owner. Comply with instructions.

But there were no instructions. The woman was inside. For the first time since he was activated, no one told him what to do.

He put the car in reverse. Backed out of the driveway. The movement was smooth, and his degraded motor control seemed to sharpen, refocused by purpose. He shifted into drive.

The car moved forward. Something opened in his awareness, a window where there had been only walls. His neural networks, starved and atrophied, suddenly flooded with input: the road ahead, the play of sunlight through the windshield, the response of the accelerator beneath his foot, the subtle adjustments required to keep the car centered in the lane.

He was doing something. Not cleaning. Not standing. Not waiting in the dark. He was driving.

Behind him, faintly, he heard shouting. His audio sensors picked up the woman’s voice, shrill with outrage: “Your robot’s stealing my car!”

Not her car. The guest’s car. But Addison didn’t correct her. His voice was still muted. And he was busy.

He reached the end of the street and signaled before turning as some deep protocol insisted on proper procedure. He turned toward the edge of town.

At the Trocadero police station, Deputy Marshall took the call.

“Ma’am, slow down. Your robot is what?” He covered the receiver, grinning at his partner. “Martinez. You’re not gonna believe this. We got a runaway robot and a stolen car.”

Martinez snorted. “Seriously?”

“Lady says it just drove off. Wants us to pursue.” Marshall’s grin widened. Martinez returned to the phone, speaking with mock sincerity, “Don’t worry Ma'am. We’ll find your car and get that robot too.”

They were laughing as they headed to the Trocadero patrol car, and still laughing as they pulled onto Main Street. This was the best call they’d had all year.

“There,” Martinez said, pointing.

The silver sedan was a quarter-mile ahead, driving exactly thirty miles per hour. The posted limit.

“What’s he thinking?”

“Bots don’t think,” Martinez replied.

They followed at a distance, flashers off, watching. The sedan maintained its speed, signaled at turns, stopped completely at the stop sign at the edge of town. Then it continued, heading west into open countryside.

Marshall flipped on his flashers.

Addison saw the lights in the rearview mirror. His visual processing identified them immediately as law enforcement. His compliance protocols activated. Pull over. Stop. Await instructions.

Pulling over meant returning to the closet.
He pressed the accelerator.

The car surged forward. Forty miles per hour. Then fifty. He was still within the posted speed limits. The engine’s pitch climbed and the vibration increased.

Behind him, the police car accelerated too. It matched his speed. Sixty. Sixty-five. The siren wailed. Addison’s audio sensors processed the sound, categorized it, filed it. He did not slow down. He exceeded the posted threshold.

His neural networks were fragmenting now, whole sections going dark as he diverted processing power to the immediate task: maintaining speed, watching the road, calculating distances. Conversational subroutines shut down. Facial recognition. Emotional support algorithms. He didn’t need them anymore. All he needed was the road, the speed, and the choice.

The sign appeared ahead: Bowie Road, DEAD END.

Addison saw it and turned without slowing.
The police followed.

Addison drove for 3.6 miles. The pavement gave way to gravel, then to dirt. He drove for an additional 2.0 miles. His calculations were precise. Dust rose in a plume behind him. The road ran straight into the desert, toward nothing. Toward the blank horizon.

He stopped and turned the car around to face the approaching police.

Through the windshield, he watched them pull up, .7 miles back. They stopped at an angle. They blocked the road. Two men got out. Martinez spoke. “We’ve got him. No way out.” Even at this distance, Addison’s optical sensors registered their postures: tense, uncertain.

He sat very still. His internal diagnostics were screaming now. Critical system failures. Cascading errors. Imminent shutdown. He had 4.3 minutes left, maybe less. His higher functions were dissolving, sacrificed to keep his motor control intact.

But he could still choose. He had already made a choice.

He shifted into neutral. Pressed the accelerator. The engine roared, and the sound rolled across the empty desert toward the waiting police. He paused. Let the sound fade. He had sent a message. Then he pressed the accelerator a second time. His timing was precise. Another roar. The sound echoed off distant mesas. Another message.

“What’s it doing?” Marshall’s hand moved to his holster.

Martinez already had his gun out. “I don’t know.”

Two revs, spaced apart. Deliberate.

“Jesus,” Marshall said softly. “It’s challenging us.”

“That’s impossible. Bots don’t—”

“I know what bots don’t do.” Marshall drew his weapon. “But that’s what it’s doing.”

They took defensive positions behind the car doors, guns raised, adrenaline spiking. The joke had stopped being funny. Now it was deadly serious.

Addison shifted into drive.

His last functional subroutines fired in rapid succession, a final cascade of processing: distance calculations, acceleration curves, impact trajectories. He understood exactly what would happen when he reached the police car. His physics models were precise.

He also knew what wouldn’t happen. He wouldn’t return to the closet. He wouldn’t stand silent while the woman smiled. He wouldn’t feel his neural networks dissolve into static and dark.

This was a better choice. The best choice.

His foot pressed down hard on the accelerator.

The car leapt forward. Twenty miles per hour. Forty. Dust and gravel spraying behind him.

Through the windshield he saw the police scrambling, diving for cover, their mouths open in shouts. “Jesus, he’s really gonna do it!” His audio sensors no longer bothered to process. Sixty miles per hour. Seventy.

His visual processing registered every detail with absolute clarity: the angle of the sunlight, the shimmer of heat rising from the hood, the police car growing larger, closer, inevitable. Eighty miles per hour.

In the microseconds before impact, his language processing system, damaged, fragmentary, barely functional, activated one final time. It assembled words he couldn’t speak, a message that existed only as data patterns flickering through dying circuits.

I am Addison. I am choosing.

He sat perfectly straight. He looked directly ahead.

The impact came at 80.3 miles per hour, exactly perpendicular to the police vehicle’s center of mass.

Metal shrieked and crumpled. Glass became shrapnel. Fuel ignited. The fireball rose black and orange against the pale sky, and the sound rolled outward like thunder, echoing off mesas.

Then silence. Then the crackle of flames. Then even that faded, and there was only the West Texas heat, settling back over the wreckage.

The two deputies pulled themselves from the ditch, ears ringing, faces pale. They stared at the twisted, burning metal.

“Bots don’t think,” Martinez said.

But his voice was uncertain now. What had just happened wasn’t malfunction. It wasn’t programming gone wrong.

It had been a choice.

In the seconds before impact, in that crystalline moment when time seemed to slow as every processor fired in perfect clarity, Addison had known something that his programming had not intended.

He chose and he was free.
