Furry Dispatch Post Downpour!
Puddles like beauty spots
Dot streets and lanes that haven’t
Gone under water, following
Thunderous downpour!
Pushing water while clinging on
To wannabe-runaway slippers
With all my might and skirting
Puddles, where necessary, I
Screech to a halt, as a burnt tyre
In mid-day summer sun-tanned
Asphalt and crane my neck, to
Spot the source of the agonizing
Wail perched on a tree trunk
60 ft above ground, catching its
Echo off the white wall of the
Multistorey-apartment block
Under the shadows of which
Stands the dense-leafed escape
Of my visiting furry friend that
May be maddeningly carrying on
A search for his lost partner,
En route to a nearby lake that
Housed them last winter!
On my way to fetching water
And daily ration from an outlet
Nearby, I leave him to his fate
And move on… only to meet
A lone swallow, beak-full of semi-dry leaves and twigs,
Parched on a parapet, before
Flying away to build her home!
As I enter the last phase of my
Journey and am about to turn
At 90 degree to enter a private path
Leading to the gates of my apartment
I see an unlikely ‘duel’ of a dove
And a swallow that has puffed
Its feathers to double its size,
To scare away her opponent, who
By then with its wings spread across
And tail spread has given a
Rare double-decker display that
Even a peacock may admire!
Droplets again begin to hit my
Sky blue raincoat and I scurry
Inside my apartment house
Leaving the duelling wingers
To their monsoon-wet fate!
