Make Yourself Bigger

"...dark hoodies in twilight walking slowly towards...

Make Yourself Bigger

I sit here in my car, as usual
outside the coffee shop
early morning
engrossed in scribbling some words
so I don't see them
until my left eye --
marvelous organ that it is ...
spots movement
in its periphery

two of them
dark hoodies in twilight
walking slowly towards
but their movement stops
when I turn my head
I stare until one waves
an open palm that says
"I've got nothing ... see?"

I reach down
between my legs
under the seat
and place it, invisibly
in my lap
then I wave back
and smile

the shorter of the two
touches the other
with the back of his hand
whispers something
and they go off
in the opposite direction

you may want to remember this
for the future
