Chickens

"... in barns and coops, clucking and crowing..."

Chickens
-- after a Northern Ireland farm

You'll find them in County Down, in barns
and coops, clucking and crowing,

on Warrenpoint farms, wandering, scratching
the soil, searching for seeds,

bobbing their heads, poised in pecking order,
displaying their hackles and saddles,

wattles and combs, where gardens, thatched
roofs, brightly-colored doors,

and single-storey block buildings complete
all manner of storybook place.
