Allow Me My Darkness

"...working all afternoon on their day off..."

Allow Me My Darkness

This is how people die,
not riding an upside down horse,
but by working all afternoon
on their day off.
Neighbours waving
as sunshine burns through the soil
and our skin.

My sunscreened nose itchy,
while I wait for the sun to blink,
or the momentary clarity of a cloud.

If heaven is all light, give me a blindfold.
Let the angels think I'm an eyeless
devil, who got on the wrong flight --
just allow me my darkness,
where I can be happy.
