Peek of the Week 042

By Alexandra Queen

Posterized Ibis.

Though you might recognize him as a baboon, ancient egyptians also associated Thoth with the moon, and therefore with the ibis, whose beak resembles the curve of the crescent moon. Thoth has been linked to wisdom, magic, and the measurement, and regulation, of events, and of time. Scribe of the Underworld, he was said to accompany the sun god Ra on his nightly voyage across the sky.

This image was created from a photograph of a Waldrapp Ibis, Geronticus eremita, taken by the author at Micke Grove Zoo in Lodi, California.
